Gartner publishes Magic Quadrant for US Emergency/Mass Notification Services

Gartner has issued a new Magic Quadrant document which focuses on enterprise-level US Emergency/Mass Notification Services offerings, and ranks 11 of the most competitive vendors.

The authors believe that ‘major improvements have been made in the overall US Emergency/Mass Notification Services marketplace since the 2012 version of this Magic Quadrant’. These include:

  • Data center geographic distribution as well as backup/recovery/failover procedures have improved greatly for many vendors.
  • Mobile device app support has exploded, with administrator and recipient apps being available for at least iPhone, Windows and Android devices. BlackBerry support is limited to five vendors.
  • SLA and customer-service-level support documentation has improved, especially regarding message transmission volume guarantees by time, customer service support levels, problem escalation procedures and application upgrade procedures.
  • There is a growing focus on enhancing crisis/incident management capabilities by offering real-time situational awareness and intelligence gathering.
  • An expansion of alerting into the operational technology (OT) realm is being seen.

Five companies were positioned in the Leaders quadrant by the authors. These are: AtHoc, Everbridge, MIR3, Send Word Now, and XMatters.

Gartner states: “The interest in, and need for, EMNS continue to grow among governments, public and private enterprises (regulated or not), educational institutions, and operators of critical infrastructures.1” We believe it is because crisis communications is becoming a best practice and a requirement for some industries.

The EMNS report includes an overview of the different types of critical incidents, which range “from localized events, such as a shooter on a campus, or a fire or power outage, to regional and catastrophic disasters, such as earthquakes (as in Chile, Haiti and Japan), hurricanes/tsunamis (as in the New York City metropolitan area, Indonesia and Japan) and terrorist attacks.”
