Royal Academy of Engineering report highlights emerging UK power supply risks

A report by the Royal Academy of Engineering, which was prepared for the Council for Science and Technology, has concluded that the security of the UK's power supply may be threatened by the winter of 2015/2016 unless government intervention occurs.

The report’s key conclusions are:

  • There are a number of market-based and political factors that are currently combining to bring about a reduction in the electricity capacity margin within the next five years.
  • This combination of factors, in the absence of intervention, would reduce the capacity margin … in a manner that would present an increasing risk to security of supply.
