The Great Central US Shakeout

In 2011 over 3 million people participated in the first-ever central US shakeout drill, choosing to practice earthquake safety at their workplaces, schools, homes, and incountless other organizations.

In 2012 a second Great Central Shakeout has been scheduled, taking place on February 12.

Businesses and organizations wishing to host a Shakeout exercise will find the relevant resources here.

Five specific scenarios are available:

  • M6.5 earthquake occurring in the New Madrid Seismic Zone
  • M6.5 earthquake occurring in the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone
  • M6.5 earthquake occurring in the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone (April 19 scenario for Indiana)
  • M7.5 Charleston, South Carolina earthquake
  • M6.5 earthquake scenario that is generic to any state
