A survey compiled by BSI‘s Cybersecurity and Information Resilience Centre of Excellence in conjunction with GovNewsDirect has looked at how prepared the UK’s public sector organizations are for potential cyber-attacks and data losses. 

In the last 12 months, 77 percent of organizations surveyed had suffered a security breach. The most common causes were staff error (32 percent), phishing (30 percent), malware (18 percent), ransomware (11 percent) and denial of service (7 percent) attacks. 

Although 94 percent of organizations said they have a plan in place to handle data breaches, 58 percent said they are concerned or not confident about being able to access their application systems in the event of a cyber-attack. 

Cloud adoption

The survey found that a transition towards cloud-based IT systems is underway, with 52 percent of public sector bodies now using Office 365 – and a further 30 percent in the process of adopting it. 68 percent of respondents said that disaster recovery and business continuity were the main reasons for moving to the cloud, followed by the ability to provide mobile / remote working access (58 percent) and security (57 percent).
