Risks of acoustic shock to call centre workers highlighted The Communication Workers Union has highlighted an incident at a BT call centre in Aberdeen, where workers suffered multiple acoustic shocks over a two day period on October 20 and 21 from white noise bursts transmitted through their headsets. A total of 45 out of the 160 BT telephone operators in the call centre received around 145 shocks in total as their headsets failed to provide the protection they needed. Staff are now making representations to BT through the CWU, which believes BT managers should have shut down the call centre as soon as the fault was detected, rather than putting their members at risk by continuing operations. •Date: 25th Nov 2005 • Region: UK • Type: Briefing •Topic: BC general

UK government surveying businesses about climate change adaptation plans Organisations from the public and private sector are being asked by Defra what actions they are taking to adapt to the changing climate. The consultation, which will include small and large businesses, as well as public sector organisations, is aimed at gaining an overall picture of what work and plans are in place. Defra expects to find that preparation for climate impacts may involve building adaptive capacity in the form of research or data collection or forming partnerships or internal organisational development. It may also mean moving location, redesigning buildings or working with others to spread the possible losses. http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/cc-nap-framework/index.htm •Date: 10th Nov 2005 • Region: UK • Type: Briefing •Topic:BC general
