UK government provides extra funding to research the impacts of climate change
Environment Minister Elliot Morley has announced new funding to improve the understanding of the impacts of climate change in the UK. More than £3.5m over five years has been awarded to Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute for its Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP). The funding will allow UKCIP to develop strategic research on the impacts of climate change across the UK, but also strengthen the role that the programme plays in equipping organisations, such as local authorities, businesses, services and utilities, and regional government, to prepare themselves for climate change. www.ukcip.org.uk

Range Rover assembly line shut down by Greenpeace activists
Early yesterday morning 35 Greenpeace volunteers shut down a West Midlands (UK) assembly line making Range Rover 4x4 vehicles. Volunteers used safety shut-down buttons to cut off power to the assembly line before handcuffing and chaining themselves to unfinished vehicles along the 150m long assembly line and branding it a ‘climate crime scene’.

Scientist finds evidence of Gulf Stream weakening
New research has found clear evidence that one of the ‘engines’ driving the Gulf Stream has weakened to less than a quarter of its former strength. This could be the first sign that predictions that the Gulf Stream may disappear within the next few years or decades could be coming true. The Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson has launched an updated heatwave plan for the UK. This comes as early indications from the Met Office hint at a warmer than average July and August this summer.
