House passes TRIA extension bill
MarketWatch has reported that the US House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday (7th Dec) extending the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program through 2007. The House voted 371 to 40 in favor of the bill. The Senate and the House now have to work on a combined bill and vote on that before it becomes law.

$1.1 million project to strengthen aviation security in the Asia-Pacific region announced
The Australian Government Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss, has announced a $1.1 million dollar project aimed at strengthening aviation security in the Asia-Pacific region. “The Joint Indonesian-Australian Aviation Security Project will be managed by the Australian Government's Department of Transport and Regional Services staff based in Jakarta and will see Australia and Indonesia working closely together on ways to help ensure Indonesian airports achieve and maintain international security standards and practices", said Mr Truss. American franchises targeted in Karachi bomb attacks
A Kentucky Fried Chicken and a McDonald's restaurant have been bombed in the Pakistani city of Karachi, injuring several people. The KFC device exploded first, the McDonald's one following eight minutes later. Karachi police chief Tariq Jamil described the bombs as "home-made, low intensity devices". Source:BBC

Screening for security
Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have developed an innovative screening technology that uses harmless, ultrahigh-frequency radio waves to penetrate clothing and can quickly identify plastic explosives and other types of weapons. The active millimetre-wave technology rapidly scans people and sends reflected signals into a high-speed image processing computer which produces a high-resolution 3-D image.

Sydney gets new SMS terror alert system
The Straits Times has reported that text messages on mobile phones and e-mail will alert hundreds of building managers and fire wardens to start evacuating office workers and shoppers in Sydney's central business district in the event of a terrorist attack. In unveiling the new evacuation plans, the authorities said people would be told to gather at three open-air sites where they would be directed to the best transport route home.
