Coordinated hoax bomb threats cause chaos in Thailand banks
Xinhua has reported that coordinated hoax bomb threats caused major business continuity problems for eight bank branches in Thailand's southern border province of Narathiwat earlier in the week. The banks were forced to evacuate their staff and customers and normal business operations could not be resumed until police and soldiers had searched the various premises.

Lessons from SARS may help pandemic ‘flu preparations
An article in the latest issue of the British Medical Journal examines how lessons learnt from SARS epidemics in China may help preparations for new epidemics, such as pandemic ‘flu. Mainland China experienced three outbreaks of SARS between November 2002 and May 2004. The first outbreak resulted in a pandemic and caused huge financial loss and social panic, but rigorous control policies prevented further pandemics. What happened with the spread of SARS must not be allowed to happen again with H5N1. Incessant efforts are needed to improve our preparedness. Chinese government allocates 120 million yuan for disaster recovery and relief
China's central government has allocated 120 million yuan (15.2 million U.S. dollars) to regions struck by recent severe natural disasters, said the Ministry of Finance. Half will be allocated to areas struck by a severe drought in Sichuan and other regions in southwest China and half will be used for disaster recovery operations related to typhoon Saomai. China hit by strongest typhoon in 50 years
Xinhua has reported that Typhoon Saomai, the strongest storm to hit the Chinese mainland in 50 years, has left at least 98 people dead and 149 missing in east China, according to local government sources. Saomai made landfall on Thursday afternoon, with wind speeds of up to 270 km per hour, bringing torrential rains and strong winds. Losses have exceeded 4.5 billion yuan (562 million U.S. dollars) in Wenzhou alone. Wide-area power outages have affected Fuding, Xiapu, Zherong, Fu'an and Ningde.

RMS publishes report on 30th anniversary of Great Tangshan Earthquake
RMS has announced the publication of a report commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Great Tangshan Earthquake, which destroyed the city of Tangshan, China on July 28, 1976. The report was produced in collaboration with the China Earthquake Administration's scientific and engineering arm, the Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM), and distributed during a series of meetings in China from July 28 through July 31. Flu pandemic drill to test response in Singapore
To prepare Singapore for the threat of a flu pandemic, a multi-agency exercise, codenamed SPARROWHAWK II, is being held from 21-22 July. Led by the Ministry of Health (MOH), the exercise will test and fine-tune the Flu Pandemic Readiness and Response Plan at various levels among key government agencies as well as the public and private healthcare institutions. This large scale exercise will involve over 1,000 personnel from MOH, the Ministry of Education (MOE), home-front and related agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA), Maritime Port Authority (MPA) and the People's Association. Regional Workshop on Preventing Bioterrorism
Senior police and government officials from 37 countries in the Asian region will participate in the Interpol ‘Asian Regional Workshop on Preventing Bioterrorism ‘workshop in Singapore from 27th to 29th March. Scientific and health experts from around the world will also be participating in the three day workshop, which aims to encourage greater regional co-operation and a more co-ordinated response to the threat of bioterrorism. Those attending the workshop will also take part in a simulation of a major bioterror event which will highlight the need for a well co-ordinated national, regional and international response.

Philippine financial institutions get low marks for disaster recovery abilities
A recent study by Financial Insights has found that despite Philippine central bank regulations requiring financial institutions to have business continuity and disaster recovery plans in place, local firms are not as well prepared for disaster recovery as firms in other regions of the world. The study found that 33 percent of the firms interviewed in the survey admitted that their organizations need more than 24 hours to recover from major downtime. Read the story
