The survey explored what priorities the various business continuity professionals who responded had for 2004. Testing and updating existing business continuity plans and improving emergency communication capabilities were found to be the top two priorities, with improving data backup capabilities following in third place.

The survey also asked respondents to list their current top threats to business continuity. The results were as follows:

1. Data security (virus, denial of service, unauthorised access) failure (56 percent)
2. Telecommunications failure (55 percent)
3. Power outage (49 percent)

The survey indicated that only 16 percent of companies test their business continuity plans more than twice per year, with 10 percent reporting that they test their plans less than once a year. Median allocation of IT budgets to business continuity initiatives was found to be 3.5 percent.
