John
Sharp, the chief executive officer of the Business Continuity Institute
has resigned. He will remain in the role for the next few months
while a successor is found. Julia Graham, chair of the BCI’s
Communications Panel made the announcement in the following statement
(published verbatim):
“I am writing to you as Chair of the
Business Continuity Institute Communication Panel to inform you
of John Sharp’s decision to step down from his position as
chief executive of the Business Continuity Institute to pursue other
interests.
John has a long association with the BCI and
has been pivotal in helping the Institute and our membership to
realise the vision of becoming a successful mutual organisation.
John was recruited in 1997 to make this dream become a reality.
No one can question that the Institute has arrived and, that this
in large part is due to the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm
of John supported by the Board, the committees, our sponsors and
you, our members.
The Institute has come a long way in these
past six years. Achievements include the development and delivery
of an educational framework, an Industry Specification (PAS 56)
and a raising of the importance and prominence of Business Continuity
Management on the Boardroom, Government and Regulatory agendas,
worldwide.
John has achieved a great deal in his time
as chief executive of the BCI and we all owe him a debt of gratitude
for his hard work and commitment over this period. We will all be
very sorry to see him go. He leaves the Institute stronger than
when he joined it and in good shape for the future. Ann, John’s
wife and the anchor in the Institute office has decided to coincide
her departure from the Institute with John’s. We wish them
both every success in their future endeavours.
We know however that that the BCI still has
challenges to deliver and your Board will work with John’s
successor to build on the impressive foundations we now have. Our
goals in 2004 remain to encourage greater and more wide-spread member
involvement, the gathering of outside perspectives, coupled with
increases in operational efficiency and effectiveness.
We will now begin our search for a worthy successor.
Our aim is to achieve a seamless handover and we will be working
with John to achieve a smooth transition to his successor by the
end of May 2004.
In the meantime, John remains at the
helm and it’s business as usual.”
