Floods impact businesses in French and Australian cities

Get free weekly news by e-mailThe risks of flooding have been brought home to businesses in the French city of Marseilles and Australia’s Melbourne. Whatever new and emerging threats hit the headlines businesses must not forget that the traditional risks of fire, flood and general storm damage are the most common, and often the most damaging.

Figures released by the US Geological Survey show that flooding is the world's most costly type of natural disaster, costing euro 170 billion (US$200 billion) between 1991 and 1995 alone. Last year's European floods are reported to have caused more than euro 7 billion of damage.

Marseilles
The BBC has reported that ‘three people have died and two are still missing as flash floods swept across much of southern France’. The city of Marseilles was the most severely affected urban area. Emergency plans have been activated and an emergency government cabinet meeting held to discuss the disaster.

Melbourne
Over 100mm of rain fell on Melbourne in just two hours, causing the worst flooding in the city for 100 years. The regional Weather Bureau is forecasting more storms and heavy rain through to Thursday. According to The Age: ‘Boats rescued people stranded on car roofs, homes and businesses were flooded and roads closed.'
