A large number of Canadian organisations may
have difficulty recovering from a significant technology failure,
according to the fourth annual Athabasca University / CIO Canada
magazine national survey of Canadian information technology (IT)
managers and professionals.
"Disturbingly,
44 percent of respondents say their organisations have no disaster
recovery plans in place," said Dr. Peter Carr, executive director
of Athabasca University's Centre for Innovative Management.
"While the security and integrity of technology
networks is a serious concern in all sectors, the study found particular
weakness in the health care and government sectors," said Dr.
Carr. This weakness is further compounded by the finding that 35
percent of respondents feel employees will often bypass internal
security systems because they find them too cumbersome.
In addition, 37 percent of those responding
said their organisations had experienced at least one serious breach
of system security, employee privacy or customer privacy, and a
further 51 percent said that serious breaches of security or privacy
went unreported.
Another important finding relates to employee
stress levels with only 30 percent of respondents agreeing that
stress relating to IT has not increased in their organisation.
