The UK Foreign Office is advising against all
travel to Bolivia due to social unrest in the country. Widespread
anti-government demonstrations have taken place during the past
two months and have sometimes resulted in the closure of the airport
in the capital, La Paz.
The
Foreign Office advises visitors already in Bolivia, and British
residents in the country, to:
* keep off the streets;
* not travel; and
* avoid any demonstrations.
The US State Department has also issued a warning
about Bolivia. It does not go as far as the UK warning but states
that: “US citizens are advised to take precautions if traveling
to the La Paz/El Alto area, overland between Oruro and Lake Titicaca
, and to the Yungas Valley east of La Paz . Some blockades remain
in these areas and in the Chapare region east of Cochabamba . Citizens
should avoid demonstrations and makeshift roadblocks. Under no circumstances
should anyone attempt to go around or through a blockade, even if
the blockade appears to be unattended.”
