‘Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation’ The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published a Summary for Policymakers which presents the key findings from the Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX). SREX assesses the scientific literature on issues that range from the relationship between climate change and extreme weather and climate events (‘climate extremes’) to the implications of these events for society and sustainable development. The assessment covers: - The interaction of climatic, environmental, and human factors that can lead to impacts and disasters; SREX reports that it is virtually certain that on a global scale hot days will become even hotter and will occur more often than they do now. In the high emissions scenario, it is likely that the frequency of hot days will increase by a factor of 10 in most regions of the world. Heavy precipitation will also occur more often in the future, and the wind speed of tropical cyclones will increase; however their number will probably remain constant or decrease. The full report will be available in February 2012. Read the Summary for Policymakers. •Date: 22nd November 2011 • Region: World •Type: Article • Topic: BC general
