Hurricanes - basic business continuity advice

Strohl Systems has issued a list of top ten tips which organisations should consider when planning to protect businesses against hurricanes:

1. Hurricanes will affect an entire region, not just one business. Ensure that the scope of the continuity plan considers the impact of a regional disaster. Make sure that alternate sites are not located in the path of the hurricane before sending employees to them.

2. Inform employees of hurricane evacuation routes in the region. Place sensitive electronic equipment and vital records on high ground before evacuating.

3. Airports and local transportation may be shut down. Be prepared to recover without out-of-town personnel. Ensure that cross-trained personnel are available so the recovery can proceed even when some employees are absent.

4. Stockpile food, potable water, and medical supplies for the command centre.

5. Pre-purchase enough plywood, nails, and tape to cover all glass on the facility.

6. Evaluate and assess temporary space for the organisation in the event that important buildings cannot be immediately occupied.

7. Be prepared to set up on-site day care in the aftermath.

8. Test gas-powered generators and portable pumps.

9. Prepare a checklist of all systems and furnishings within the building. Keep this list in a secure, offsite location.

10. Have a camera ready to photograph all damage for insurance purposes.
