Hurricane Isabel is expected to make landfall
in North Carolina within the next 24 hours. The storm has weakened
to a category two with maximum sustained winds at around 110 mph
with higher gusts. Forecasters expect little change in strength
prior to landfall.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 145 miles from the centre
and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 260 miles.
The current projected track of Isabel is as follows:
Although wind strength will be high, and some
structural damage will occur, the main impact is likely to be caused
by flooding with storm surge flooding of 7 to 11 feet above normal
tide levels expected near and to the north of where the centre crosses
the coast, and rainfall amounts of 6 to 10 inches likely along the
path of the hurricane.
