The NOAA National Hurricane Center in Miami
has reported that Hurricane Isabel has reached Category 5 intensity
on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. Isabel is currently showing
maximum sustained winds of almost 160 mph, with higher gusts.
Isabel is the first Category 5 hurricane in
the Atlantic basin since Hurricane Mitch in 1998. Mitch resulted
in an estimated death toll of 11,000 and it destroyed almost the
entire infrastructure of Honduras.
