Nortel
Networks to extend reach of metro DWDM networks
Nortel Networks has revealed plans to enhance
its metro optical portfolio to extend the reach of metro dense wavelength
division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks. The announcement
was made at NFOEC (National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference) 2003
in Orlando.
Greater metro optical network reach means that
service providers will be able to locate redundant data centres
more remotely from the 'home office' for protection against wide
area disasters.
Nortel Networks intends to deliver these enhancements
in two phases. In the first phase, scheduled for availability in
the fourth quarter of 2003, Nortel Networks’s OPTera Metro
5200 Multiservice Platform will extend the reach of metro DWDM networks
to as far as 350 kilometres over 2.5 Gbps (gigabits per second)
channels and 110 kilometres over 10 Gbps without dispersion compensation.
The second phase enhancement, scheduled for availability in the
first quarter of 2004, will extend this reach to as much as 600
kilometres over 10 Gbps channels.
