The Institution of Civil Engineers has issued a report on the resiliency of various aspects of UK critical infrastructure.
‘State of the Nation: Infrastructure 2010’ provides an evidenced-based assessment of the UK energy, transport, water, flood and waste sectors. It considers the condition and capacity of infrastructure networks, their resilience, their sustainability and their inter-dependence, and how the UK can fund the major investment required for their maintenance.
The report provides some specific recommendations for the improvement of flood risk management:
• Improve efficiency through long-term planning, collaborative working and setting performance targets for flood infrastructure.
• Improve community engagement to agree realistic expectations about flood risk. Highlight the opportunities available for people and communities to reduce flood risk and improve resilience
• Increase the use of adaptive natural drainage systems such as sustainable urban drainage systems.
