Zero data loss disaster recovery: inhibitors

Get free weekly news by e-mailA new survey has looked into the issues that are preventing many companies from implementing zero data loss disaster recovery solutions.

The poll was carried out by research agency Vanson Bourne on behalf of Axxana. It was conducted during May 2010 in the UK and the USA among a total of 200 IT decision makers and aimed to understand the role that cost has in the adoption of zero data loss disaster recovery solutions.

The survey shows that end users still feel that achieving a zero data loss disaster recovery strategy is out of their financial reach, with over half of the respondents (57 percent) across the two countries citing cost as a deployment inhibitor for this technology.

In the UK the financial sector proved itself to be the least driven by cost possibly given the high level of data-related legislation this market is subject to; even so, nearly half of the respondents, 44 percent, find it a main adoption inhibitor when it comes to recovering 100 percent of their data. At the other end of the scale is the manufacturing industry, with cost being an issue in over two thirds (68 percent) of the cases. In between these two groups are markets such as retail, distribution and transport (48 percent).

When looking at the answers from the size of the responding organizations, smaller companies (between 1,000 and 3,000 employees) were less affected by cost (46 percent) than their larger (over 3,000 staff) counterparts (56 percent). This could be due to the fact that smaller organizations perceive zero data loss to be completely out of their reach due to many contributing factors such as the need to establish a nearby data centre / center and the complexity of the communication infrastructure that was required to achieve zero data loss until today.

In the USA, the figure that stands out the most is that related to the financial services market, with 76 percent of respondents saying that cost is indeed the main inhibitor preventing them from achieving zero data loss disaster recovery. In second place is the manufacturing industry with 56 percent of the respondents finding cost a significant issue. Less affected but still very sensitive to the cost issue are markets such as retail, distribution and transport, with nearly half of the people surveyed (48 percent) finding cost a main concern.

“This survey has really shown how today’s end users still feel that eliminating data loss though a disaster recovery strategy is still out of their budget,” said Eli Efrat, Axxana’s CEO. “Although cost is still an important consideration, the results support our strategy and I am confident that a year from now solutions such as our Phoenix System will have a much bigger foothold in the market because they make zero data loss DR an affordable option.”
