Disaster recovery aid ordered for New York area

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that federal disaster recovery aid has been made available to help businesses and communities in the New York area recover from the effects of a series of severe storms that started late in July.

Michael D. Brown, FEMA director and Under Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response at Homeland Security, said that the assistance was authorised under a major disaster declaration issued by President Bush following a review of FEMA's analysis of the state's request for federal relief. The declaration covers damage to private and public property from severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred over the period of July 21st through August 13th.

Immediately after the declaration, Brown designated the following 14 counties eligible for aid to residents and business owners: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chemung, Columbia, Delaware, Fulton, Greene, Livingston, Montgomery, Ontario, Rensselaer, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates.

Justo Hernandez was named by Brown to coordinate federal recovery operations.

Business owners can begin the disaster application process by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.
