The Global Security Challenge has launched a competition to discover innovative new solutions to help protect governments and enterprises as they adopt the cloud.
The ‘Cloud Security Challenge’ offers a $10,000 cash grant, sponsored by HP’s central advanced research group HP Labs, and mentorship by an executive from CapGemini. Up to three finalists will also be invited to test their technology in an HP Labs cloud test-bed.
The award challenges the brightest minds in security technology from around the world to explore radically new ideas and game-changing solutions in cloud computing. The Challenge aims to uncover the creative capabilities of innovators in universities and infant companies that apply to security needs in cloud computing.
Applicants can enter the competition online at: www.globalsecuritychallenge.com. Entry is free and all entrants will gain feedback on their submissions. The deadline for submissions is 15 March 2010.
Entry Criteria
- Entrants must offer a technology that can be used to prevent, defend against, cope with or recover from terrorist incidents and other criminal acts in the ‘cloud’.
- The venture can have not more than GBP£3million in annual revenues in 2009 (total annual sales revenue).
- Pre-revenue stage companies, individuals performing research, and/or ideas are welcome to enter, but entrants must have a working prototype of their technology that can be demonstrated.
- Entrants may be either companies or universities from around the world.
- Examples of areas of interest are (but are not limited to): data protection/storage in the cloud, authentication and identification, encrypted (safe) data transfer, data classification, understanding data locations, vulnerabilities from social networks (web 2.0) and virtualization SW.
- The judging will focus mainly on the disruptive potential of the technology and focus less on its maturity. The judging committee consists of leaders from industry, government and venture capital.
