The Institute of Risk Management (IRM) has welcomed the introduction of ‘ISO 31000:2009, Risk management – Principles and guidelines’, stating that:

“ISO 31000 represents the culmination of four years of development, discussion and consultation between hundreds of risk and standards professionals in 30 countries. It represents a valuable source of solid, structured and organised guidelines on the subject of risk management. The standard sets out principles for effective risk management, a framework to embed it throughout an organisation at all levels and a process for management of risk. It is not intended as a standard against which an organisation can be certified.”

The IRM will shortly be releasing, in cooperation with partners, a simple guide on how to use ISO 31000 in a practical context. This guide will be free to download from the Institute’s website at www.theirm.org

IRM chief executive Steve Fowler said “The new standard is an important addition to the tools available to guide organisations in every business sector worldwide. It provides a roadmap for those seeking to embed risk management, and the IRM has a range of education solutions to help practitioners understand and utilise such a risk roadmap to get to their chosen destination”.
