NY-based Forbes.com avoided extensive communications
systems outages during the widespread loss of power caused by the
failure of the Niagara grid. Employees worldwide were impacted,
but regained the ability to communicate and access critical information
via e-mail in a matter of minutes.
The company utilised its real-time e-mail disaster
recovery service with Annapolis-based Evergreen Assurance and through
the following process was able to restore global e-mail:
* IT executives experienced a loss of e-mail
and messaging applications due to power outage.
* Executives authorised Evergreen Command Center
personnel to execute the automated fail-over process.
* Evergreen implemented fail-over process from
Annapolis location.
* The Evergreen DR system determined that Forbes.com’s
primary systems were completely unavailable and automatically implemented
a disaster recovery sequence to engage a remote, dedicated secondary
system.
* The secondary system was engaged and assumed
the role of the primary e-mail system.
* All traffic flowing in and out of the Forbes.com
e-mail system was directed to a dedicated secondary site and access
to e-mail and data were restored.
All Forbes.com employees with Web mail now
have full access to all e-mail applications and data. Communications
throughout the corporate network are operational. The process, transparent
to end users, is allowing employees worldwide to continue day-to-day
business operations.
