US Environmental Protection Agency highlights the role of HVAC systems in pandemic flu transmission

Get free weekly news by e-mailIn a presentation given in June 2009 the US Environmental Protection Agency has discussed pandemic flu infection mechanisms and the role that building HVAC systems can play in this.

According to ‘Swine H1NI Influenza A: Transmission of Viruses in Indoor Air: HVAC System Protection Options’ indoor air currents both created by HVAC systems and people movement assure that droplet nuclei remain airborne indefinitely; providing an ideal mechanism for circulating the virus rapidly around the building.

The presentation also explains how UV-C light (ultra violet light in the ‘C’ band) sterilizes germs by destroying the A to T bond in their DNA.

Adding mechanical filters and UV-C light together in successive layers is an even more effective way of killing the flu virus whilst it is circulating in the HVAC system.
