Survey looks into IT downtime tolerance in UK organizations

Get free weekly news by e-mailBakBone Software has disclosed the findings of a poll of 100 UK IT decision makers.

In today’s information-centric economy some 24/365 organizations have such high reliance on their data that they need the ability to access it almost constantly. As a result, 20 percent of the survey respondents indicated that their corporate data cannot be inaccessible for more than one hour or they will not be able to operate normally.

Not surprisingly, this percentage rises in the financial industry where companies are so reliant on electronic information that loss of data access for even one hour would severely disrupt operations in 37 percent of organizations. In comparison, 88 percent of respondents from the manufacturing sector do not require such high data availability, as the majority of systems are not directly linked to revenues and therefore are more tolerant to slightly longer outages.

“These findings are indicative of the current state of the market; despite the one-hour bar being a very high benchmark, a fifth of respondents see it as unacceptable. They cannot wait this long to regain access to their data,” said Andrew Brewerton, technical director, BakBone.
