Russia/Ukraine gas dispute prompts EU to speed up energy security initiatives

Get free weekly news by e-mailThe present situation caused by interruptions of gas supplies from Russia via the Ukraine has creates serious difficulties for a number of European Union countries. Businesses, especially manufacturers, in various countries have had to scale back or even suspend activities because of gas shortages.

Security of energy supply is a priority for the EU and as a result of the current crisis the EU will speed up work on the various energy security initiatives already under way. Particular emphasis will be put on priority interconnections both within the EU and with supplier and transit countries, increased transparency, and the developing of crisis mechanisms to tackle temporary supply disruptions.

A special Energy Council will take place on 12th January in order to look at the situation on the energy market, including monitoring, and to discuss the concrete measures which can be taken to improve the current situation and to prevent future problems in this area.

Energy security will also be on the agenda of the upcoming General Affairs Councils with a view to reaching decisions at the Spring European Council.
