The European Commission has proposed a wide-ranging package which will give a boost to energy security in Europe. The EU Energy Security and Solidarity Action Plan sets out five areas where more action is needed to secure sustainable energy supplies.
The European Commission believes that there are increasing risks to Europe's energy supply security and the Energy Security and Solidarity Action Plan sets out measures which will be taken to reduce the threat of future disruption as well as enhancing the ability of the EU nations to jointly respond in a crisis situation.
Future actions will include: more effective support for projects to build the required infrastructure; make better use of EU indigenous energy resources; and give more attention to solidarity, including EU crisis mechanisms, oil stocks and a variety of mechanisms to respond to possible gas disruption.
