The European Commission has decided to refer the United Kingdom to the Court of Justice for failing to transpose European legislation on enhancing port security into national law within the set time limit.
The EC says that the UK government has started to implement the required measures but despite the deadline expiring on 15 June 2007 the government has yet to finalise the necessary legislation.
The aim of the Directive in question is to establish a community-wide framework for the security of all port areas. It complements instruments already in force since 2004 which apply only to ships and port terminals.
The anti-terrorism Directive sets out “common basic rules for measures intended to prevent deliberate illegal acts against ports and various parts of them, as well as defining mechanisms for implementing these measures and for checking their conformity.”
