UK gets a ‘National Risk Register’

Get free weekly news by e-mailThe Cabinet Office has published a National Risk Register, which sets out the government’s assessment of the likelihood and potential impact of a range of different risks threatening the UK.

According to the Cabinet Office, the National Risk Register “is designed to increase awareness of the kinds of risks the UK faces, and encourage individuals and organizations to think about their own preparedness.”

The register assesses risks from both a likelihood and an impact consideration and includes details of what the government and emergency services are doing to prepare for the each particular risk.

Pandemic influenza is assessed as the risk with the highest potential impact, followed in second place by coastal flooding.

The document advises organizations to develop business continuity plans and highlights BS 25999. It states that after an incident business continuity can help organizations “return to normal levels of business more rapidly, limit the volume of business lost to competitors, and reduce the chances of customers losing confidence in them.” Further stating that “Not only is such planning widely regarded as good business sense, it could even be critical to an organisation’s survival.”

The Cabinet Office is seeking feedback on the register.
