Peripheral Concepts, Inc. has published the
results of a survey of over 1,000 US-based IT managers. The study
looked at business continuity and disaster protection practices
and plans. The survey targeted nine industries. In response to the
September 11th terrorist attacks, the finance, telecommunication
and transportation industries have led the way in implementing reliable
business continuity systems. Education, health, and retail distribution
are poised for major changes in the next two years.
The survey found that 80 percent of respondents
have IT disaster recovery processes and plans in place.
Other findings include:
*Remote hot sites are poised for significant growth and
the share of company-owned disaster recovery sites will decrease
in favour of recovery facilities located at a co-locator and operated
by the enterprise.
* Among the major breakthroughs revolutionizing
data protection implementations and plans are the extended use of
remote replication, the widespread deployment of SANs, and the increased
utilisation of Disk-to-Disk methods. Sites using remote replication
will more than double in the next two years.
* Slow recovery from system failure stands
out as the most critical problem plaguing IT continuity.
* Cost shows as a major concern to smaller
organisations, and the cost of bandwidth remains the major impediment
to implementing an optimal data protection solution.
