The Business Continuity Institute is hosting a workshop that will explore the extent to which business continuity management programmes must take effective account of the ‘people factor’ during and in the aftermath of disruptive incidents. The topics for the workshop reflect specific issues for all those with responsibility for continuity and resilience planning in organisations of every size and throughout every sector: how can the business case be made for investment in the human aspects of business continuity management; how do ‘duty of care’ and corporate manslaughter legislation impact on the business continuity management programme; and what role should be played by the human resources department in business continuity planning?
Many organisations have a well developed business continuity programme but close inspection often reveals a lack of attention to the expectations of the very people upon whom the plans depend. The challenge of providing for the needs of employees, customers, contractors and family members must be addressed as part of the process of returning to business-as-usual. For many BCM professionals, this is a particularly difficult area requiring an understanding of both statutory obligations and the psychological effects of disruption and dislocation from the normal day-to-day patterns of working.
The workshop will include case studies from organisations where close cooperation has been established between those responsible for the development of business continuity plans and the HR department as well as presentations from specialists in legal issues, the requirements of BS 25999 (the British Standard for Business Continuity), recovery operations and clinical psychology. Extended group discussions will enable delegates to learn from the experiences of fellow professionals in all these areas.
