Terror alert issued for Northern Ireland

Get free weekly news by e-mailThe Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has warned of an increased terrorist threat from dissident republicans.

The region’s chief constable, Sir Hugh Orde, is expected to outline the state of the current threat when the policing board meets today.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that Sir Hugh told the newspaper that the dissidents are ‘disorganised but dangerous’ and that while they appear to be concentrating on mounting attacks in the province, he has no doubt that they will target other parts of the UK if they can.

An interview in the Irish paper, the Sunday Tribune, with the leadership of the Real IRA, said that the group had reorganised and was ready to resume its campaign of violence to force a British withdrawal from Ireland.

Sinn Féin Policing Board member, Alex Maskey MLA commenting on the PSNI dissident warning said that these groups have no support and called upon them to end their activities. He also called for the PSNI response to be measured.

Mr Maskey said: "These groups should end their activities. They have no support at all. There is no support for armed actions within the nationalist or republican constituency; the vast, vast majority of people are in support of Sinn Féin's strategy.

"I also want to call for any PSNI response to be measured and as non disruptive as possible."
