Michael Gilbert, director of Steelhenge’s Energy & Utilities Resilience practice, was awarded an OBE for exceptional service to the electricity and gas industries in the UK New Year’s Honours list.
Michael qualified as a civil engineer and is a chartered member of the Institute of Gas Engineers & Managers. He joined British Gas Corporation in 1980 and has worked in British Gas, Transco and National Grid in a wide range of operational and managerial roles.
He built up a wealth of knowledge in the British and European gas industries leading to his appointment in 1996 as Head of Systems Operation and in 2004 as Head of Emergency Planning with National Grid. As well as managing the daily physical and commercial operation of the British gas supply network for many years, Michael developed and implemented National Grid’s emergency framework.
In this role, he also worked extensively with government to ensure co-ordinated and effective responses to gas and electricity supply emergencies in the UK. He then moved to work for the UK Government’s Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR (formally DTI)) which is the lead government department responsible for energy resilience in the UK. Here he developed and implemented the
industry/government emergency framework for the management of energy
emergencies and the internal BERR emergency framework.
In 2007, Michael joined Steelhenge Consulting. He leads the team specialising in helping companies and organisations in the UK and Europe to ensure they have effective arrangements in place to manage and minimise the multiple consequences of disruption to energy supply or other major utility incidents. He continues to work closely with industry and government on the development of energy emergency arrangements.
