The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) selected eleven state IT initiatives in ten categories to receive its 2007 Recognition Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Information Technology in State Government. The District of Columbia Unified Communications Center (UCC) won in the category of business continuity and disaster recovery.
The business continuity and disaster recovery awards category addresses IT initiatives related to continuity of government operations. Business continuity or disaster recovery initiatives may relate to contingency planning, disaster recovery, homeland security, health alerts and business resumption.
The UCC was opened in 1996 and is a state-of-the art communications center that consolidates the command and control functions of the DC Police; Fire, Emergency Medical Services; Emergency Management Agency (EMA), and Public Services. In the event of a regional emergency, the UCC will serve as the command center for local law enforcement agencies and EMS first responders. Furthermore, this advanced facility can host regional and federal authorities during national emergencies.
