Schlumberger launches new security solution for W-LAN networks

SchlumbergerSema has launched a W-LAN (wireless local area network) solution with secure access through its EAP-SIM smart card. The solution was demonstrated at last week’s GSM Brazil. W-LAN networks offer high-speed access (11 Mbps) to Intranet and Internet through radio frequency.

Schlumberger, uses the EAP-SIM smart card for user login authentication. With authentication criteria carried on the smart card itself rather than stored on the server, the data is encrypted before it is sent through the radio frequency, ensuring that mobile communications achieve a high level of security. The Schlumberger solution brings an important advancement to the wireless market, where security over mobile networks has been elusive, and one of the factors that should help expand usage of W-LAN networks in the corporate environment.

Besides the card, Schlumberger has also developed the authentication server and the gateway to complement the W-LAN security card solution.

By using radio frequency for data access and transmission, the Schlumberger W-LAN system does not require physical connections for network installation. This cost efficient and practical solution is ideal for companies that operate in rented buildings or who have remote workers needing access to the Internet or company Intranets from hotels, airports, restaurants, or other public places once there are W-LAN hotspots or antennae in place.
