John Hurrell, currently Head of Marsh Risk Consulting (Europe, Middle East and Africa), has been appointed AIRMIC’s new chief executive. He will start his new position on January 7, 2008 and succeeds Alan Fleming, who has been fulfilling the role on an interim basis since June. Hurrell will be retiring from Marsh at the year end, following 29 years of distinguished service.

His appointment brings to an end a rigorous search to find a successor to David Gamble, who stepped down during the summer after nearly ten years in the role, in order to lead PRORIM, AIRMIC’s e-learning course.

“We said at the time that we would go on searching until we had found someone of the highest calibre, and only then would we make an appointment. I’m delighted to say that in John we have achieved just that,” said AIRMIC chairman Colin Campbell.

“As well as having extensive market experience, John has the leadership, communication and strategic skills that the position demands.”

Hurrell said: “I’ve known AIRMIC for many years and admire the way it represents the interests of its members. In addition to providing a range of value-adding services, its views are both sought and respected and it makes a real difference in the market.

“I look forward to working with my new colleagues, the membership and partners to build on AIRMIC’s unique position in promoting best risk management practice and acting as a catalyst for further change.”

Campbell also praised the contribution of Alan Fleming. “Alan stepped into the role superbly in the summer and has made possible a seamless transfer of responsibility. We have continued to forge ahead,” he said.

John Hurrell has held senior leadership roles at Marsh (and previously Sedgwick) in both the Risk Consulting and Insurance Broking operations. Before joining Sedgwick in 1978, he was with Royal Insurance Co. based in London.
