On 15th October the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) officially launched a new tsunami warning system. This provides India and other Asian countries with alerts within 30 minutes of an earthquake which could potentially trigger a tsunami occurring.
The Rs.125 Crore project was approved by the government of India in October 2005 and its development was led by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Propagation of tsunami waves in the ocean and consequent sea level changes will be monitored by bottom pressure recorders which have been installed both the Bay of Bengal and in the Arabian Sea at appropriate locations.
