In adopting a joint resolution on natural disasters, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have called on the European Commission (EC) to create a European disaster reaction force that would react immediately to emergencies, providing expert disaster and crisis management resources.
The need for a European disaster reaction force was initially proposed in a report by former Commissioner Barnier and MEP’s expressed regret at the lack of response and follow-up in this area. MEPs asked the Commission to draw up a concrete proposal to implement such a force.
MEPs also asked the EC to mobilise the current EU Solidarity Fund in the most flexible manner possible, without delay, while calling for greater spending on flood defences.
