AT&T's network disaster recovery team of
70 people, some of whom helped restore service in New York after
September 11th, will spend five days in the United Center parking
lot, Chicago, simulating the reconstruction of an AT&T switching
centre that has been damaged or destroyed.
The exercise schedule is as follows:
Friday June 20th
70-member NDR team and equipment (including some 18 giant tractor-trailer
trucks) arrive on site in response to an emergency call out after
a mock disaster damages an AT&T switching centre. The team will
deploy up to 15 miles of fibre optic and coaxial cable and will
use mobile satellite earth stations and microwave towers to access
AT&T's network if it cannot be reached with cable.
Saturday, June 21th
Continued deployment of equipment and cabling, powering-up equipment
in semi-trailers.
Sunday, June 22th - Tuesday, June 24th
Continuation of disaster recovery exercise, testing of equipment
and processes, customer visits.
John Kern, the AT&T director who led the
company’s disaster recovery efforts in New York after the
World Trade Center disaster, will be leading the exercise.
