Coinciding with this year’s Business Continuity Awareness Week in Australia, the Business Continuity Institute has announced that The Business Continuity Institute Incorporated (BCII), an Australian association, has been established and registered with the Office of Fair Trading.

The BCII will operate as the Australian chapter of the BCI and will function within the rules and regulations of the BCI. BCI certification and its attendant international recognition will continue to be managed by the BCI in the United Kingdom.

The BCI says that incorporation as a legal Australian association is a huge step forward for the BCI’s operations in Australia. The creation of a legal BCI entity in Australia allows the BCI to operate more effectively and to raise funds to better support Australian BCI Members.

Going forward, it will be possible to organise and run BCI events and training, subsidise forums and provide enhanced services for all Australian BCI members, who will automatically become members of the BCII.

The first committee of the BCII will comprise:

Bill Hannan – President
Peter Sierwald – Vice President and Treasurer
Barry Pendle – Secretary
Annette Cummings – Ordinary Member
Tim Janes – Ordinary Member
Les Whittet – Ordinary Member.

UPDATE

The BCI wishes to clarify the information above, which was supplied to Continuity Central by the BCI's Australian representatives:

"Whilst it is correct that an Australian legal entity has been created, this simply lays the groundwork for an Australian Chapter of the BCI to be formed. The BCI Board has not yet been presented with a proposal and business plan from Australian members for Chapter formation. The BCI Board is hoping to receive and approve these plans in June.

"The BCI welcomes the formation of national and regional Chapters, and we have recently changed our governance structure to permit this. We believe there are many benefits in allowing local BCI members to run local activities, and to establish local branches of The BCI Partnership.

"BCI members should be reassured that they remain members of the BCI globally, benefiting from our brand and strength. They will not become members of any other organisation."
