Colorado State University has issued an update to its 2007 Atlantic Hurricane season forecast. This predicts that a very active hurricane season is on the cards with landfall probabilities well above the long-term average.
Overall nine named hurricanes are forecast, with five becoming intense hurricanes.
Probabilities for at least one major hurricane landfall are:
* Entire US coastline: 74 percent (average for last century is 52 percent)
* US East Coast including Peninsula Florida – 50 percent (average for last century is 31 percent)
* Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville – 49 percent (average for last century is 30 percent).
Above-average major hurricane landfall risk is also predicted for the Caribbean region.
