Peterborough businesses given evacuation map

Get free weekly news by e-mailBusinesses in the UK city of Peterborough have been given evacuation maps by the local authority, reports http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/.

The map, jointly developed by Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire police, is ‘divided into eight zones and shows how the city centre would be evacuated in response to major incidents such as floods, serious fires or terrorist attacks’.

Information on how to develop a simple business continuity plan was also included with the map as well as information on the city’s recently-launched automated alerting system for city centre businesses.

Peterborough City Council coordinates emergency planning from a high-tech planning suite which was developed in 2005.

The centre was used in response to the London terrorist bombings on 7 July 2005 when emergency rest centres were put on standby in case they were needed to accommodate stranded rail passengers. The centre also identified all council staff who were in London at the time and made contact with them to ensure that they were safe.

The centre has 10 dedicated workstations, 20 data and phone lines, as well as digital radio and television.

Peterborough city council also owns an emergency response trailer that acts as an on-site ‘nerve-centre’ in the event of an emergency incident. It contains a meeting room and control centre equipped with computer and communications links.
