A large counter-terrorism exercise will be held in Queensland this week as part of security preparations for next year’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings. ‘Maroon Luminary’ is designed to rehearse arrangements under the Australian National Counter-Terrorism Plan.
“The July 2005 London attacks confirmed that continuous testing of security arrangements is crucial to ensuring an effective response to terrorism,” said Attorney-General Philip Ruddock. “Australia has an excellent reputation for hosting major events and the exercise program is a key part of our strategy in responding to threats.’’
The exercise will involve federal government agencies including the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Defence Force, ASIO and the Attorney-General’s Department.
Queensland Police, the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Queensland Fire and Rescue Services and Queensland Ambulance will also participate.
