Civil Contingencies Secretariat and Emergency Planning Society to work together to develop a ‘competency framework’ for UK civil protection

Get free weekly news by e-mailThe Cabinet Office’s Civil Contingencies Secretariat (CCS) has announced that it is to work in partnership with the Emergency Planning Society (EPS) to establish a set of core competencies designed to ‘further enhance the professionalization of the workforce in the civil protection sector’ and raise ‘standards of service delivery’. The core competencies will guide practitioners, their employers and those who train them. The aim is to support the Civil Contingencies Act and strengthen overall resilience of UK organisations, authorities and critical infrastructure.

The first stage of the process will be the publication of a Scoping Paper and Consultation Questionnaire later in the year.

Once the information from this initial consultation has been collated, there will be a series of discussion workshops in the first half of 2007. The draft Competency Framework will be drawn up and then circulated for wide external consultation. It is anticipated that the final report and adoption of the competencies will be complete by 2008.
