Post disaster worries highlight lack of business continuity awareness raising

Get free weekly news by e-mailDespite recent surveys showing that the majority of US businesses have business continuity plans in place, (http://www.continuitycentral.com/news02627.htm for example), many workers are not confident that they will continue to receive salaries after a disaster.

According to the results of the American Payroll Association's (APA) 2006 ‘Getting Paid In America’ online survey, only 52 percent of workers in the United States believe that they will continue to get paid in the event of a natural disaster.

This may indicate that, while businesses have taken appropriate business continuity measures, the existence of business continuity plans has not been communicated to employees.

Business continuity awareness raising amongst staff is an important consideration. It is one of the ten Certification Standards for Business Continuity professionals agreed between the Business Continuity Institute and the Disaster Recovery Institute International.

If awareness raising is neglected it not only leaves employees to cope with unnecessarily exaggerated concerns about their company’s and their own long term future prospects; it also means that employees have not been informed about their role in a disaster and how they should obtain crisis communication information.
