FEMA launches debris contractor registry

Get free weekly news by e-mailThe Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced the launch of its online debris contractor registry as a key component of its Debris Removal Operations Recovery Strategy. The registry is a web-based database that allows debris removal contractors across the nation to post information about their capabilities and availability.

FEMA developed this registry to assist state and local governments to plan for and manage debris removal operations either before or after disasters occur. This new tool will give states and local governments access to information on debris removal contractors in their area.

“The Debris Contractor Registry is a tool that can be used in preparing for and responding to disasters,” FEMA Director David Paulison says. “We encourage contractors nationwide to sign up and describe their equipment, staffing and capabilities so that state and local officials can access and use the information in their planning efforts.”

Although FEMA does not contract for debris removal, under a presidential disaster declaration the FEMA Public Assistance Program can reimburse a cost-share to state and local governments, tribal authorities and eligible private nonprofit organizations for eligible work done by contractors.

To ensure the post-event ability to immediately initiate coordinated debris removal operations, FEMA strongly encourages state and local governments to establish pre-event debris removal plans and contracting relationships. The Debris Contractor Registry was expressly designed to help facilitate state and local planning efforts.

The Debris Contractor Registry is an element of the US Public Private Partnership, which is administered through the US Department of Homeland Security. It represents a pilot program of the National Emergency Resource Registry that will develop as the overall program grows.

FEMA does not endorse, approve or recommend any contractors listed in the database.
