Gulf Coast being prepared for 2006 hurricane season

Get free weekly news by e-mailFEMA officials have consulted with local emergency planners in Louisiana , Mississippi and Alabama to review weak areas in evacuation and response plans.

FEMA says that the fact that the region is still undergoing recovery reconstruction work following the 2005 hurricane season will make disaster planning much harder for the 2006 season.  “Many bridges, in some cases the only evacuation routes, are still under repair or out of service. Basic services such as hospitals, banks, nursing homes and local governments have been badly damaged and are struggling to stay open,” says FEMA.

The local consultations will help identify immediate priorities and any amendments that may need to be made to current emergency and disaster recovery plans.

Carville site
On March 1st, 2006 , the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) closed operations at its temporary morgue location near Carville, Louisiana. The morgue, a state-of-the-art facility and training center with dormitories to accommodate a staff of nearly 500, was a joint operation between the state of Louisiana and FEMA, with the single goal of working together in support of local parish coroners.

"The Carville facility remains the property of the federal government. It is an assurance to the people of the Gulf Coast that FEMA is ready to provide immediate support in the event of another disaster in the region or elsewhere in the nation," said Scott Wells, federal coordinating officer for Louisiana disaster recovery.

The Carville federal facility will be used as a staging and distribution site for federal resources. Food, water, blankets, and other critical items will be stored in Carville, thereby expediting delivery time in getting valuable assets to impacted individuals.

Urban Search and Rescue teams, medical teams, and other federal responders will also use this site as a staging area prior to moving into disaster-stricken areas.

The Carville site is being evaluated for possible use as an evacuation site for federal responders currently working in southeastern Louisiana . Officials are also looking into using the facility as a regional training site for federal and state responders.
