Various demonstrations and protest events in central London are currently being planned for the May Day weekend. Although these are likely to be peaceful, the lessons of previous years point to the possibility of violence against business property and premises and organisations such prepare for such a possibility.
The highest profile event so far is a plan to create a human chain around the Westminster no-protest zone, which surrounds the Houses of Parliament.
Activists are likely to have learned from previous years’ May Day events and from last year’s G8 protests and will adapt to anticipate police tactics. Attempts may be made to blockade or slow down transport networks and disparate small groups may use mobile communications to organise ‘impromptu’ demonstrations rather than pre-publicising meeting points.
The City of London Police is holding May Day briefing sessions for London businesses on Monday 3rd and Monday 10th April.
