Scotland Online invests £1.7m in new Dundee centre

Get free weekly news by e-mailScotland Online, a regional IT solutions provider, has opened the doors to its new £1.7 million state-of-the-art data centre in Dundee. The company has also announced details of a strategic partnership with SunGard Availability Services.

The centre, which has been built to a high specification, has been designed to allow Scotland Online to expand its high availability hosting services and offer new and existing clients reliable data security protection.

In addition to providing managed hosting services the centre will also deliver high-speed networking, application monitoring, and disaster recovery services.

The partnership with SunGard Availability Services will enable the company to provide business continuity and IT disaster recovery service to Scottish businesses.

David Hunter, executive chairman of Scotland Online, said: “The launch of the data centre represents the first phase of an investment programme which will see us enhance our service offering over the course of the coming years.

“Our core business has always centred on data hosting and providing continual Internet access so the launch of a data centre was a natural progression for the company.

“By forming a strategic partnership with SunGard we will now be able to offer business continuity services that are resourced by one of the world’s largest IT companies.

“The consequence of data loss through software and hardware failure, or even human error, can prove disastrous to companies.  Although the majority of businesses are beginning to realise the importance of storing business-critical information data off-site, it is hoped that this centre will help to highlight the importance of business continuity planning.”

The data centre incorporates four disaster recovery suites with the capacity to seat 100 workers, all of which were created following consultation with SunGard.  This will allow clients to relocate to the centre if they were to lose access to their data or offices.

In addition, the Scotland Online data centre is networked to SunGard’s Livingston business continuity centre.
